What do a line of hair care products, an Oscar-winning short film, and the fight against stereotypes have in common? A bold story!
Dove, the well-known personal care brand, recently launched the Dove Kids Hair Love Collection, a line dedicated to the Afro curls of young children inspired by Matthew A. Cherry’s animated short film, which Dove helped fund. Hair Love tells the story of Zuri and her father as they tackle styling her seemingly untamable curls. It’s a story that resonates with Black women and girls, who are often told that their hair is complicated to handle, messy, or problematic.
But things are changing. In recent years, the Nappy (Natural and Happy) movement has inspired more people to embrace the beauty of their natural Afro curls, helping them define their own beauty standards beyond the stereotypes of what beauty should look like. And, in the process, to demand that they find products on the market that suit their needs. Dove’s is a bold move consistent with its own positioning and its initiatives for “authentic beauty.” Among these is its support for the very CROWN Act, a law that prohibits hair-based discrimination related to ethnicity. The short is delightful, we invite you to watch it.
